Program Expectations and Code of Conduct

Represent Yourself, Your School, and Your Community
As we are viewed in public, YOU are the face of Foothill. Represent this well.

Attitude is Everything!
Be positive, kind, friendly, patient, and ready for whatever comes your way with the best attitude possible. In other words, stay motivated.

Performance, Education, and Fun
Do not change the sequence of this order. This is your FHS Instrumental Music Program's philosophy for achieving your best experience. Remember, this is supposed to be FUN!

Instrumental Music Rehearsal Guidelines

  • When the Director is at the stand, all talking and playing will stop immediately
  • When the Director stops the ensemble to make a comment, all playing and talking will stop immediately and students will listen
  • Raise your hand to make a comment or ask/answer a question
  • Absolutely no talking or playing out of turn
  • Be respectful of everyone's skills and abilities

Color Guard Rehearsal Expectations

  • Have all equipment ready for daily rehearsals during and after school
  • Be prepared for all physical activities that occur daily by doing your own personal stretches and warmups
  • Be properly dressed with PE or exercise clothing. Clothing such as gym shorts/shirts, yoga/stretch pants, t-shirts, sports bras, etc., need to be appropriate in length and cover as well as follow TUSD dress code. Be sure to have proper footwear such as tennis shoes, running shoes, or dance shoes. Use of any wrist or ankle braces is encouraged as needed.
  • No use of cell phones and other electronic devices unless directed by the Color Guard Captain or Advisor for instruction and rehearsals. Absolutely no homework or other subject-matter materials from other classes during rehearsals.
  • No put-downs. Work as a team in support of one another and lead each other to success.

Dress Standards

Marching Uniform

  • Check that you have all the parts needed for every performance: Shako, 2 pairs of gloves, jacket with sweat band, trousers, black socks under black Military Oxfords with spats, and garment bag
  • The shako should fit 2 fingers' width above the top of the ear and the bill should gently touch when 2 fingers are laid lengthwise on the nose. The snap should be snug so that the shako does not move side to side or front to back.
  • The sleeve of the jacket should be 1-1.5 inches past the wrist when the arm is dangling.
  • Trousers should be 2 inches above the heel of the shoe or prior to the breaking point of the lace area of the shoe. Pants should have enough room in the seat to allow the thigh to be parallel with the ground while not pulling out the seam or being unduly uncomfortable.
  • Shoes should not be kept in bags because they will damage and tear the garment bag.
  • During performances, hair has to be cut, pinned, or tied to be the appropriate length as well as off the collar of the uniform, regardless of gender. No hair should ever touch the uniform during competition.
  • Marching uniforms are returned freshly dry cleaned at the end of fall semester during finals week.

Day Uniform

Day uniforms are worn at Away games, midday school functions like assemblies and pep rallies, and as prescribed by the Drum Major.
  • black IM program polo, current year
  • black slacks or jeans
  • black shoes, suggested

Concert Attire

Measurements for tuxedos and gowns are made in the classroom in early fall semester so that outfits are ready well in advance of the first formal concert.
